During fire starting, many people may be tempted to push the fire striker down the shaft of the ferro rod, which creates good spark, but also risks hitting the pile of tinder and throwing tinder everywhere. A more efficient method of using the ferro rod is to hold the striker component steady, and pull the rod away from the tinder pile.
